You are in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town International Airport, Sir Lowry’s Pass snakes over the Hottentots-Holland mountains and through the Kogelberg Reserve, known to be the world’s most diverse biosphere. When your car dips over the mountain and breaks through the blanket of morning mist that often caresses this distinctive landscape, it is like escaping into a different world. You are in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, with the Kogelberg and Groenland Mountains creating an amphitheatre that embraces the experience in nature for which your travel-heart is longing.

Orchards, vineyards, undulating countryside.

It is hard to believe that before roads were built, this valley was mostly closed off. The original ox-wagon trail is still clearly etched into the mountainside. Today Elgin is one of the largest exporters of deciduous fruit, and, albeit small in comparison to other wine regions, the remarkable quality of cool climate wines has taken the world by storm.

Large apple and pear orchards flash past with vineyards gracing the undulating hills. The odd farm gate leads up to quaint, unassuming cottages that add to the countryside’s rural charm. Other gates announce magnificent wine estates waiting to be explored.

The heart of the valley is it’s people.

Fast-forwarding to 2020 – arguably the most challenging year humankind has seen in a long time, there is still so much to be joyful about. Nowadays, we find it more and more that it is the simple things that tend to bring a smile to your face. For us in Elgin Grabouw, it is the quintessential taste of a delicious Peregrine Pie, freshly baked every morning at this landmark farm stall next to the road as you enter the valley. Deeper into the valley, more authentic tastes await like blueberries, pure fruit juices, and free-range chicken. The valley is bursting at the seams with artisan bakers, flower and plant experts, people dedicated to conservation, adventure, and cycle specialists and farmers who understand the land. Synonymous with cool climate wines, Elgin beckons wine lovers to explore everything from Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, and Riesling to Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. If real people and authentic tastes are what you are after, a tapestry of stories is about to unfold on your trip, real stories brought to life by people who moved here to make it a home. Now they want to share it with you.
