There's something quite magical and authentic about winter in Elgin, temperatures are definitely lower than surrounding areas, but the chill brings with it a unique beauty of its own. Crisp mornings start the day with a heavy mist sunken within the dips of the rolling hills and a winter sun that shines stark over the many vineyards and fruit orchards amidst their off-season slumber.

For those not already tempted ... Elgin Grabouw Tourism are inviting you to come and experience the very first Elgin Winter Festival – WINTER, WINE AND WORDS – over the long weekend from 9-11 August 2019. It will be a festival to celebrate all that we love about winter, fireplaces, red wine, world class entertainment, books and delicious comfort food! There will also be a special focus on the ladies in honour of National Woman's Day on the 9th. A great excuse to escape your hibernation and come to experience Elgin's warmth in the cold!

Elgin Railway Market

The Art Deco Inspired Elgin Railway Market will be open for trade throughout the weekend. For all 3 days of the festival visitors can hop on a Ceres Rail steam train from Cape Town to Elgin. There will be an option of booking an overnight ticket and take the train back to Cape Town the next afternoon. Limited seats available for the overnight option. Come and see The Beast in action, arguably the most efficient heater in South Africa! In recent tests temperatures of 428C where recorded on the top of the tank and at 9 metres roof height a mere 48C was expelled into the atmosphere. Thus 380C was radiated into the room – a far cry from most conventional fireplaces where most of the heat roars up the chimney.

There will be delicious foods for sale, from curries, steaks, burgers, pizzas to Sushi. The Elgin Railway Market will be hosting the Elgin Winter Wine Festival on the Friday night and Bottomless Coffee Band on Saturday night. Tickets for both events are limited and cost R150 each. Elgin Grabouw Tourism invites all Elgin Winter Festival attendees to support our #HandbagsOfHope charity drive in honour of National Women's Day. A donation point will be available at the Elgin Railway Market all weekend from 9-11 August.

Handbags will be distributed to women in need throughout the Grabouw and Elgin communities by Siphila Sonke, our local charity outreach program. Each lady will not only receive much-needed toiletries, but a beautiful handbag of her very own. We thank you in advance for opening your hearts this Women's Day!
